People’s Theatre Celebrates Half Million Fundraising Milestone


The cast of Rapunzel, at the People’s Theatre Newcastle, were given an extra boost this week with news that fundraising has just reached half a million pounds.

£110,000 pledged from Trusthouse Charitable Foundation joins generous donations from local trusts and individuals.  This means that a third of the target of £1.5M has been raised for the redevelopment of the People’s Theatre in Heaton. The People’s Theatre provides life-changing opportunities for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to become involved in amateur theatre and is committed to producing work to professional standards.  Its work has been  recognised nationally for contributing significantly to the well-being and cultural development of the region and its communities.

Judith Leigh, speaking for the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation said: “We are thrilled to be involved in the campaign to redevelop The People’s Theatre . We hope that local businesses will give their support to the project which will see this important local venue offering an even wider range of cultural events, accessible to all.” Trusthouse Charitable Foundation is an independent grant making foundation, supporting projects throughout the UK. In 2013­/14, it made over 300 grants totaling £2.1m.

Tony Childs, for the People’s Theatre, said: “This is a very real Christmas present for the theatre. We've still got a long way to go, so we need all the help we can get, but this marks a significant milestone for us.”

Sarah Scott, who plays Fairy L’Oreal in Rapunzel, added: “It's great news for the Rapunzel team and for all those who love the People’s Theatre. As Fairy L’Oreal might say ‘it's because we’re worth it!” Rapunzel is being performed at the Peoples Theatre from 6th - 14th December. Its is previewed here and reviewed here
